This limited-edition ornament features Cato Vernon (about 1759-1800), a Revolutionary War hero and member of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, who was manumitted and was “absolutely free” from enslavement through his military service.
Cato is shown alongside other members of the 1st Rhode Island Regiment, which was made up of soldiers of African, Indigenous, and European descent and was one of the first integrated units in the Continental Army during the American Revolution.
The design celebrates Rhode Island’s historic commitment to liberty and equality, commemorating the bravery of the regiment’s soldiers and their role in the fight for American independence.
The ornament is gold-plated and measures 2.99 inches by 2.89 inches, featuring a detailed depiction of soldiers from the First Rhode Island Regiment.
