Doris Duke was passionate about jazz. She, along with partner and jazz musician Joey Castro, founded Clover Records in 1964. The intention of the record label was to give a voice to talented jazz musicians—including Anita O’Day. Known for her sultry vocals and innovative sense of rhythm, O’Day was one of the pioneers of bebop, a form of jazz that shows off the clever improvisation skills of musicians.
